Rain-slick road contributes to Monday wreck
     l A 2007 Dodge pickup driven by 59-year-old Gary Imhoff of Plantersville, ran into a guardrail north of Rusk State Hospital on U.S. Highway 69. When the back wheels lost traction on the road, the cargo trailer Mr. Imhoff was carrying pulled the vehicle into the rail. No one was injured.

Reklaw woman dies after 1-vehicle wreck
     k Donna French, 20, of Reklaw, was the driver of this vehicle involved in a onevehicle accident Feb. 4. She was critically injured and air flighted to East Texas Medical Center Tyler, where she later died. Funeral arrangements were unavailable at press time.

Joint city-school election called May 9
Coliseum's contractor finishes 'punch list' before wrapping project
      Wayne Haglund, Rusk ISD attorney from Lufkin, led the school board in an annual team building session Monday evening. The session followed the regular board meeting in which the board called an election for 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, May 9.

Training for census workers begins
      Workers are being solicited for 2010 census positions. Training and mileage are paid and competitive pay is available on a weekly basis. To work in the census program a person must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age. Identification must be provided with a passport or a driver license and Social Security card. Veterans may use SF-15, supporting documents or DD 214.

2 new computer labs, 190 new computers added to campuses
      Alto ISD has made major improvements over the last three years in almost all areas. A new elementary campus will top the list of accomplishments in 2009. On the technology front, two new computer labs and more than 190 new computers have been added. Computers district-wide have all been upgraded to the "Microsoft Office 2007" system.

Police investigate recent burglaries
4 homes and businesses robbed in January; no arrests made
      Rusk Police are investigating a recent burglary at Texas Tangler's Beauty Salon on Loop 343 in Rusk. Teresa Talacon, owner and operator, said she went to the shop on Monday, Jan. 19, and found the door open and a small window broken. "Only a small person could get through the window," Ms. Talacon said.

TxDOT to resurface parts of FM 22
      CHEROKEE COUNTY — TxDOT maintenance crews this week are scheduled to begin approximately two weeks of resurfacing on parts of FM 22 between US 69 south of Jacksonville and SH 110 south of Ponta. Daytime lane closures will be in effect while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic in twolane areas.

Coaches' meeting Feb. 17
      The Cherokee County Baseball/ Softball Association, formerly known as the Alto Youth Baseball/Softball Association, will hold a mandatory coaches' meeting on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. at the Alto Rural Water office. This season, teams will only play against teams within the association, which will consist of Alto and Rusk.

Rusk Baseball/Softball Association sign-ups slated
      The Rusk Baseball/Softball Association will hold their sign-ups from Saturday, Feb. 14 through March 7. Sign-up times are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Rusk High School Gymnasium. The cost is $35 per child for children ages 3-4 and $60 per child for children ages 5-15.
