Church plans chicken spaghetti dinner for Feb. 8
      The Calvary Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church, Highway 21 E. in Alto, will sponsor a chicken spaghetti lunch Sunday, Feb. 8. Dine-in or carryout meals will be available. Dinners are $7 for adults; $4 for children under 10.

2 die in accidents
      Two men were killed in separate Cherokee County accidents over the weekend. The first occurred at 1:55 p.m. Saturday on FM 768, two miles south of Gallatin. State Trooper Tyson Metzig said, "A white Ford flat-bed pickup was traveling north when the driver attempted to turn left into a private drive.

Coaches meeting planned for baseball/softball league
      Season for the Cherokee County Baseball/Softball Assoc. (formerly Alto Youth Baseball/Softball Assoc.) is just around the corner. A mandatory coaches meeting for anyone interested in coaching in Alto is scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Alto Rural Water office.

Jacksonville College slates Jaguar Day Feb. 7
      Jacksonville College will host Jaguar Day 2009 on Saturday, Feb. 7. The day will be set aside for high school juniors and seniors and high school graduates to visit the college. Registration for all events begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Norman Library.

      Special trainings began Jan. 30 and will continue on Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27 for persons interested in learning health and wellness training. Classes will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

High school student gets 'published,' wins statewide award
Kelsey Palmer says that writing the feature was the 'epiphany that changed my life'
      In October 2008, Rusk High School junior Kelsey Palmer wrote a story recapping the "unconventional journey" of RHS English teacher Montie Sunday that was published in the Cherokeean Herald. The thought of awards never crossed Kelsey's mind. At the time, the experience of writing an article about the passion of one of her favorite teachers was enough for her.

      AUSTIN - State Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) was reappointed by Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst to four Senate committees: Transportation and Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, Intergovernmental Relations and Nominations.

     PHOTO: TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION Texas Department of Transportation crews from the Rusk and Jacksonville maintenance sections resurface FM 855 near Larissa on Monday. The crews, have been resurfacing parts of FM 855 for the past two weeks and will move to FM 177 east of Mount Selman. Daytime lane closures will be in effect while the work is in progress.

      A group of Rusk citizens opposing the filing of petitions calling for a wet dry election in Rusk have organized and are having meetings. The group called CALL (Citizens Against Legalized Liquor) met at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at First Baptist Church.

Unusual 'freezing fog' transforms East Texas
      Every now and again, something comes along that individuals aren't used to seeing. This was true on Thursday morning when Cherokee County residents awoke to find a fine white powder blanketing trees across the county. What they found wasn't snow, but soft rime, also known as frozen fog.

     k School board member Rodney Hugghins presents Dr. Jim Swink and his wife, Jeanie, with a certificate of appreciation during the grand opening of Eagle Coliseum. Dr. Swink and the late Clarence Mayes were honored by Dr. Jim Largent and the RISD School Board.
