Panola College scholarship named in memory of late Charles Wallace
      Judy Wallace, friends, family and members of the rodeo community have established the Charles Wallace Memorial Rodeo Scholarship at Panola College. The scholarship will be used to support the men and women who compete on the Panola College rodeo team.

Fruit tree clinics planned at area nursery
      Cherokee County Extension Horticulturist Joe Daniel and Cherokee Master Gardners will instruct a clinic at Dover Plant Farm at Alto on growing fruit in your backyard. The plant farm will host a clinic at 1 p.m. Feb. 14. Dover's is located south of Alto on U.S. Highway 69.

      Shirley Reese RN for the HOPE Partners in Health program is at the courthouse in Rusk every Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon to provide free blood sugar and blood pressure testing. For additional information call Mrs. Reese at (903) 586-7781.

Calf winner
     Anthony Jacobs, left, Wells FFA member, was one of eight students winning calves in the Houston Fort Worth Stock Show Jan. 25. He was awarded a $500 certificate to purchase a registered heifer to be shown in the 2010 show. He will scramble for a calf at the Houston Livestock Show in March. Health department says all flu vaccines are gone
      Coughs, aches, pains and a generally "icky" feeling leading to a desire to do nothing more than sleep. It may not be the exact medical diagnosis, but it is a simple way to describe influenza, more commonly known as the flu. The world goes through flu season, which is the cold half of the year in each hemisphere.

School improves, meets new goals
      It is amazing to look back over the past three years and see the many accomplishments of Alto's students and staff. In every major area, there has been marked improvement shown. We are fortunate to have good kids and a dedicated staff.
