3-year project will create new landfill linings at Allied Waste in Jacksonville
BY GLORIA JENNINGS

Lee A. McCormick, president of Community Development Associates, LLC met with Cherokee County commissioners Monday morning to discuss his company's plans to apply for a $4.8 million tax exempt non-profit loan to renovate the Allied Waste landfill at Jacksonville. The $4.8 million will be spent over a three-year period at the facility and will purchase and install new landfill linings.

Commissioners adopted an order authorizing the county judge to approve bond financing and designate an officer for the public hearing.

Mr. McCormick explained that landfills are in a certain category that allow non-profit status for loan applications.

Bond financing companies will be able to apply for up to $189 million in funds to be spent over a three-year period. Of the $189 million, $53 million will be awarded as tax exempt bonds.

Commissioners named April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Child Protective Services of Cherokee County will sponsor a coloring and poster contest at all elementary schools. These posters will be placed on display April 8 on the courthouse lawn. There will be hot dogs and balloons, as well as a ribbon cutting. Winning posters will be displayed in the courthouse during the month.

In another matter, commissioners approved an agreement for the health department to send lab specimens to the DRL lab. Laying of utility lines in precincts 2, 3 and 4 was approved. The Rusk Chamber of Commerce will utilize the courthouse grounds for the annual Fair on the Square, May 23-24.

Harold (Buz) Parrish was reappointed for a two-year term to the ACCESS board of trustees.

Commissioners also approved the license and weight monthly report; resubdivision plat at Eagle's Bluff and Andy's subdivision plat.

Attending the meeting were Judge Chris Davis; Commissioners Mary Gregg, Kevin Pierce, Moody Glass Jr. and Byron Underwood; County Clerk Lavern Lusk and County Auditor L.H. Crockett.

The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 14.
