Following 2007 slump, most Cherokee County cities show improved retail sales
For purchases made in January, sales tax collections jumped 93 percent in Cuney, 58 percent in Wells, 29 percent in Rusk and 2.83 percent in Jacksonville. Posting declines for the same time period were Alto, 10.79 percent and New Summerfield, 8.82 percent. In the year-to-date column, cities in Cherokee County are posting positive growth with the exceptions of Alto and New Summerfield. As the largest retail center in Cherokee County, Jacksonville is once again showing growth. Year-todate, Jacksonville is posting modest growth of 3.61 percent. Most cities in Texas are faring better than East Texas. According to information released by Texas Comptroller Susan Combs, the sales tax base grew an average of 8.8 percent in February compared to the same period one year ago. Combs delivered $436.1 million in March sales tax payments to Texas cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts, a 9.9 percent increase compared to March 2007. So far this calendar year, local sales tax allocations are up 7.1 percent compared to the first three months of 2007.
