New review committee will oversee railroad's engineering proposals
American Heritage reports on 'March push' for promotions
BY MARIE WHITEHEAD

The Texas State Railroad Authority held a business meeting at 2 p.m. Feb. 20 at City Hall in Palestine.

Paul Schranck, manager of the American Heritage Railways of Texas, operator of the TSR, noted recent successful events for the train and stated, "We plan for a big push of promotions scheduled in March."

Advertising has already begun in support of the train, "The Little Engine That Could." January and February drew great response with its offer of $10 tickets to citizens of Cherokee and Anderson counties in appreciation of their support. He also reported plans for repairs to specific pieces of rolling stock. Engines include Nos. 300, 400 and 500.

Discussion of outstanding bills for payment included legal services to Potter Minton of Tyler, Stone Consulting & Design, Inc. and two local newspapers, the Cherokeean Herald and Palestine Herald Press.

The disposal of surplus materials at TSR was also discussed.

A meeting to establish a review committee for engineering proposals will be held soon with consultant, Gary Traylor of Tyler. Chairman Steve Presley, Bob Goldsberry and Mr. Schranck will visit with Mr. Traylor for this purpose.

Future funds being negotiated for the train's restoration and operation include FEMA reimbursements and a $2.1 million sum which calls for matching funds. A priority expenditure calls for ties, rails and ballasts, to be followed by engine and coaches repair.

Previous meetings minutes were also approved.

Present in addition to Mr. Presley, Mr. Goldsberry and Mr. Schranck were Dale Brown, Dan Davis, Charles Hassell and Marie Whitehead; also Bobby Pennington of the City of Palestine.

A general consensus of "so far, so good," was held by those present at the meeting's end.
