Cattle guards allowed on county roads Cherokee County Commissioners approved the sale of a generator at a meeting Monday morning in the county courtroom of the courthouse in Rusk. The generator is located at the old police department in Jacksonville. The winning bid was for $3,000 from J&J Electrical Services in Houston, which was the highest bid received. Others bids included East Texas Concrete Co. of Alto, $1,500; Ricky Brown Trucks & Equipment in Jacksonville, $1,557 and Frank Oden of Jacksonville, $388.88. In another matter commissioners voted to allow existing cattle guards on county roads, but prohibit gates across county roads. A list of locations of cattle guards will be presented at the next court meeting. Commissioners are to provide exact location of each cattle guard. Commissioners approved the return of overpaid taxes to three taxpayers. Linda Beard met with commissioners and explained that the taxes had been paid twice. State law requires approval for return of any taxes over $500. Commissioners approved the monthly reports for the county auditor and constables precincts 1 and 4. March 16-22 was designated as "Poison Prevention Week" in Cherokee County. A contract with East Texas Medical Center was modified to include an extension of five years.
