Program on Relay for Life presented at meeting

Billy Watson reported at the Feb. 21 meeting on work with the Relay for Life program of the American Cancer Society. He had visited with the Kiwanis Club of Rusk, and had given them information on the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life Program of Cherokee County. The event will be held all night Friday, April 25 until approximately 7 a.m. Saturday morning at Mauldin Field in Jacksonville. Relay teams will walk or run around the track. The teams will consist of individuals representing businesses, churches, clubs, organizations and families.

During the Relay for Life, team members may enjoy games, food, music and camaraderie while camping out on the surrounding grounds.

All people are asked to remember or honor a loved one who has cancer or who has died with cancer by purchasing a "Luminaria" for $5. Their name will appear on a paper bag with a candle inside which will all be lit around 10 p.m. for the ceremony honoring these people. These bags will be placed around the track.

He said Alto Lions Club will be visited the next Tuesday at noon and also the Rusk Rotary Club will be visited and asked to join the fight against cancer.

Jeffrey Johnson and Sonny Adams reported on the progress of the golf tournament being planned for March 15. At present there are 12 sponsors for the tournament at $100 each.

President Vic Whadford read letters of appreciation from the Leader for the Blind program and the World Services for the Blind. Also a letter of appreciation was read from the Rusk Kiwanis Club thanking the club for participation in the Kiwanis Health Fair by providing an Eye Screening Examination. People with poor vision were screened, thus allowing them to be properly fitted with eyeglasses.
