Alto dominates TSWA all-state football team
BY LELAND ACKER

Alto's stellar football season continues to bring the Yellowjackets recognition as the Texas Sports Writers Association named several Mean Sting standouts to the Class A all-state football team. The team was named Monday.

Alto's offensive and defensive anchors both earned players of the year awards, with Tarlandus Mitchell being named Offensive Player of the Year for his 1,202 rushing yards with 23 touchdowns and his 1,685 passing yards with 19 touchdowns.

Mitchell was also named first team all-state quarterback and defensive back.

Alto linebacker Clayton Scott shared Defensive Player of the Year honors with Munday's Samuel Nunez. Scott averaged 15 tackles per game and was also named first team all-state linebacker.

Head Coach Keith Gardner was named co-Coach of the Year with Munday's Pat Corcoran.

Coach Gardner was honored for leading Alto to the Class A Division I state title, while Coach Corcoran led Munday to the Class A Division II championship.

Marcuse Gasaway was named first team all-state running back.

First team all state defensive players were Derek Mumphrey, first team defensive lineman, and Lance Low, first team linebacker.

Alto went 14-0 en route to the 2007 Class A Division I state championship in December, a repeat of the performance of the 2006 team.

The Jackets have won 28 consecutive football games and have not lost a game since entering Class A in 2006. The UIL will realign the districts next week.
