Youth do well at food show
BY WENDY EMPRIMO

The Cherokee County 4-H held their annual County Food and Nutrition Show Saturday, Jan. 12. Twelve 4-H participants met at the Cherokee County Electric Co-op and competed in such categories as "Nutritious Snacks," "Main Dish," "Fruit and Vegetable," "Breads and Grains," "Place Setting" and a "Sports Nutrition" poster contest.

Each child prepared his or her own dish, presented it to the judges and talked about its nutritional value, how their dish was prepared and what they learned from the experience.

Each participant scored high enough to win a blue ribbon. When asked, County Extension Agent Willie Arnwine said, "I can't remember a time in the history of the Cherokee County Food Show when this has happened."

Participants included Sarah Rempfer, Samantha Jo Rempfer, Katie Dickey, William Davis, Jessica Beasley and Amanda Rathburn with the Footbridge 4-H club; Thomas Parker, Zachary Parker and David Wingard with the Hearts in Bloom 4- H club; and Clay Anderson, Joshua Anderson and Camille Simmons with Clover Leaf 4-H club. Participants with the highest score in their respective category and age division will compete at the District Food and Nutrition Show to be held Feb. 2 at Stephen F. Austin University. Those participants are Sarah Rempfer (Main Dish, Senior), Samantha Jo Rempfer (Main Dish, Intermediate), Amanda Rathburn (Fruits and Vegetables, Senior), Clay Anderson (Breads, Junior), Jessica Beasley (Junior), Camille Simmons (Nutritious Snacks, Senior), Thomas Parker (Nutritious Snacks, Junior), Zachary Parker (Breads, Senior) and David Wingard (Breads, Intermediate).
