Tapestry donated to church
      Roy and Ann Durrett are a part of "Branded by Christ Cowboy Church," located in the community of Rusk. The church's first Sunday was Easter Sunday 2006 with Curtis Oliver as the pastor. The congregation met in the old feed mill owned by Ike Daniel. The church started out with 19 people in their core group and has grown since.

      One Cherokee County man hit paydirt when he called the state comptroller's number. He has almost $800 waiting for him to claim. Lists of persons having more than $250 in unclaimed property were published in area newspapers recently.

Free blood sugar and presure tests are provided
      Shirley Reese RN for the HOPE Partners in Health program is at the courthouse in Rusk every Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon to provide free blood sugar and blood pressure testing. The service is provided by the Partners in Health Program of HOPE Inc. in Jacksonville.

Club discusses money making projects at Nov. 7 meeting
      Rusk Lions Club chili supper will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Rusk High School. Tickets are $5 each. The club met Thursday, Oct. 30. Special guests were Nancy Timmons, Boots Burfoot and Betty Broussard. Lion Ann Brown announced thus far the club has received $1,087 in rifle raffle sales and $450 in chili supper sales.

Alto High School Ex-students meet quarterly in Rusk
     l A group of Alto High School graduates meets every three months to reminisce of former days. This group meets in October at the Thomas J. Rusk Hotel. They had formerly met at Harvey Collins Restaurant. The meal is a dutch treat event and everyone is invited. Fund benefits Rusk man
      A fund has been established at Franklin Bank to help with expenses at M.D. Anderson Hospital for Joshua Ward.Mr. Ward has a paraganglioma tumor attached to the carotic artery in his neck. Three doctors will perform his surgery at the Houston hospital to remove the tumor.

Bank fund benefits child needing specialized surgery
      A fund has been established to benefit a Rusk baby who will undergo surgery in Dallas Oct. 28. Three-month-old Jeremy Wayne Lee Jr. was diagnosed with craniosynostosis. Corrective surgery is required to remove a strip of bone from his skull to allow room for his brain to grow.

     Amy Collins, a fifth grader at Rusk Intermediate School is the first student at the school to read and test on five of the Texas Bluebonnet books. For her accomplishment she received a free pizza.

Welcome home

Landin holds his two-year-old son, Nicholas, and is greeted by his father, Jose. Sgt. Landin was greeted Oct. 31 at Nu Time Truck Stop on Frankston Street with 20 American flags and balloons by the Welcome Home Soldiers, an East Texas organization that honors and welcomes returning service men and women.

Arson under investigation
      The Cherokee County Sheriff 's Department is investigating an arson incident. Lt. Chris White said a suspect, identified as Ricky Allen of Cuney, has been charged with second degree arson. Mr. Allen allegedly went to the home of Mitchell Cauley, CR 3407, Jacksonville, at approximately 8 p.m. Sunday and threw a can of gasoline through a window.

Burglaries cease
      Home burglaries and car thefts seem to have stopped in the Rusk area, said Assistant Chief Roy Cavazoz. "We don't know exactly what to attribute this to," Mr. Cavazoz said. "However, we do know that one of the suspects we were watching moved out of town and maybe some of the ones we were questioning decided to stop.

Assailant wanted Laneville man's cash
      A Laneville man was assaulted after he cashed his payroll check at Max Thomason's Bail Bond business in Rusk. Lt. Chris White said Monday that Paul James of Lanevillle cashed his payroll check around 5 p.m. Oct. 31. When he went into the bail bond business another man was in there.

Rusk State Hospital resale shop is open 1st 2nd Fridays
      The Resale Shop operated by the Volunteer Council for the Rusk State Hospital Inc. is open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at 545 Castner St in Rusk on the first and second Friday of each month. All proceeds benefit the patients and programs at Rusk State Hospital.

Dedication is Nov. 8
      The SCV Camp 2009 Cross of St. Andrews at Alto will dedicate two Confederate markers at Fields Chapel Cemetery in Anderson County at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8. Fields Chapel is on U.S. Highway 84 approximately seven miles west of Maydelle.
