2 sheltered workshops merge assets
Cherokee County Mental Retardation Assn. will administer $1.7 million payroll
      The Anderson County Sheltered Workshop in Palestine is now affiliated with the Cherokee County Mental Retardation Association. By a vote of the CCMRA's board Sept. 12, the assets of the Anderson County facility were accepted.

Crimestoppers offer reward for information concerning fire at Sardis
      A home in the Sardis community was destroyed by fire on Jan. 28. The home was located on CR 2215 near FR 18547, approximately six miles southwest of Rusk. The fire was discovered Jan. 29. Cause was undetermined and arson is suspected.

New roof installed on Heritage Center

      The problems at the Heritage Center of Cherokee County dribbled in - one raindrop at a time. With a roof that sprang a new leak with every rain, the museum's collection of antiquities was in danger of being destroyed. And a paltry bank account made the roof impossible to replace.

Mission Tejas office catches fire
      The hurricane known as Ike was not a friendly visitor to a Texas State Park in Cherokee County. The headquarters at Mission Tejas State Park, located west of Alto, was damaged in a fire on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 14.

TxDOT crews to begin pavement repair operations on SH 294
      Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews are scheduled to begin pavement repair operations in various locations on SH 294 in Cherokee County between SH 21 and the Anderson County line. Drivers should anticipate daytime lane closures while the work is in progress.

Caddoan Mounds plan archeology fair for Oct. 11
      Caddoan Mounds State Historic Site will have an Archeology Fair 2008 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. The Hasinai Indians of the Caddo Nation will conduct authentic ceremonial dancing along with sharing their heritage information in a storytelling format.

TDCJ to sponsor photography contest
      The Hodge Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) will sponsor a photography contest. The entry fee is $5 per 8x10 photo or $10 for three photos. Proceeds benefit the American Diabetes Association, St. Jude's Hospital and the Cherokee County Crisis Center. Deadline for entry is Oct. 13.

Small town applies Rita's lessons
      The city of Wells has gone through hurricane preparations and evacuations before. Many citizens remember the logjam of traffic on U.S. Highway 69 from people evacuating coastal cities in the wake of Hurricane Rita. Wells managed to make it through Hurricane Ike as well, although the problems this time weren't just limited to the roadways.

Hog program set Sept. 25
      A Feral Hog program is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Woodmen of the World Building in Jacksonville. Speaker will be Dr. Billy Higginbotham, extension wildlife and fisheries specialist from Overton. Wild hogs continue to cause significant damage to property in Cherokee County.

     Business of the Month banner is displayed by Karen Loden and staff at the Daily Grind Coffee House and Bakery in Rusk. Representatives of the Rusk business community and the chamber of commerce joined the staff in celebrating.

3 promoted at Texas National
      Texas National Bank recently announced three job promotions at the Rusk Bank. Toni Meador will be the new branch president; Brad Turlington and Laila McCalister are both new assistant vice presidents. The announcement was made by Royce Fletcher, chairman, CEO and president of Texas National Bank, Jacksonville.

Cherokee County power restored; county damage assesment ongoing
      Cherokee County is getting closer to returning to normal after Hurricane Ike. Cherokee County Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ken Hannah said electricity has been restored throughout most of the county. "There are probably a few hundred people in remote areas that may not have power yet, but for the most part, the county has electricity," Mr. Hannah said.

FEMA offers financial assistance to homeowners, renters, businesses
      Cherokee County residents affected by the damage of Hurricane Ike may apply to FEMA for federal assistance. FEMA has set up a telephone line open 24 hours a day for anyone who needs assistance. That number is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
