Keep Rusk beautiful
     The recently formed Keep Rusk Beautiful organization presents its monthly Award to Good Samaritan in Rusk and its president, Kay Epperson. Through the year, Mrs. Epperson and her volunteers have cleaned, painted, and vastly improved the appearance of the building and property. Keep Rusk Beautiful, under the guidance of Chairman Teresa Langley, is working with the city of Rusk to raise public awareness on ways to improve the appearance of the community. The Pride Award will be presented each month to a different business or residence which helps to enhance the beauty of Rusk.

      Friends of HOPE (Helping Others Pursue Enrichment) Center are involved in a fundraising endeavor. Contribution levels for individuals include: donor, $1-$49; contributor, $50-$249; supporter, $250-$499; sustainer, $500-$1,499; patron $1,500- $4,999; and benefactor from $5,000 up.

Democrats kickoff campaign season with grand opening at party headquarters
      Cherokee County Democrats will kick off the campaign season with the grand opening of their headquarters at noon Thursday. The party headquarters are located at 402 College Ave. in Jacksonville. Local candidates: State Rep. Chuck Hopson, 2nd Judicial District Judge Dwight Phifer; Commissioner Precinct 3 Moody Glass Jr.

Unity dinner, silent auction slates by Democrats
      Cherokee County Democrats will attend a unity dinner and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, Eagle's Bluff Country Club in Bullard off FM 344 West and CR 187. "We're looking forward to an exciting election in what has been an historic year," club president Joanna Reagan said. "Our unity dinner kicks off an ambitious fall campaign.

Free, reduced meals available to qualifying students
      Cherokee County schools offer free and reduced priced lunches to students. Parents may visit the school campus office or the superintendent's office to pick up an application for the program.

Cherokee, Anderson workshops plan merger
      The Anderson County Workshop will soon merge with the Cherokee County Sheltered Workshop. The two organizations will have combined assets of $1.764 million and more than 50 employees. Plans were discussed Aug. 28 for the merger by the Cherokee County Mental Retardation's sheltered workshop. The executive committee of the board met for a review of the discussion to date.

TJC nursing school dedicated Friday
Partnership breaks speed records in establishing school
      A crowd of approximately 200 gathered at ETMC Jacksonville Friday to officially dedicate and launch Tyler Junior College's new nursing school. The facility, located on the fourth floor of the ETMC Jacksonville hospital, represents a cooperative effort among the Jacksonville Economic Development Corporation, ETMC, and Trinity Mother Francis.
