New pastor announced
      The Rev. Virgel Dailey is the new pastor of the Alto First Assembly of God Church. He is formerly from Henderson. The Alto church is located at the corner of Highway 21 and Mill Street. Sunday services at the church are at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday evening service begins at 6:30 p.m.

Ava Noelle Hutchison
      Jeff and Kyla McCuistion Hutchison of McKinney announce the birth of their daughter, Ava Noelle, on Aug. 8. She weighed six pounds and 13 ounces and was 18.5 inches long. Grandparents are Lowell and Wanda McCuistion of Nacogdoches and Randy and Ruth Hutchison of Allen.

Couple announces engagement
      The engagement and approaching marriage of Ashley Nicole Thompson and Clinton Harding Norwood, both of Rusk has been announced. The couple will be married Sept. 5 at Castle on the Lake in Jacksonville. Miss Thompson is the daughter of Sue Ann and David Joseph of Jacksonville and Duane Thompson of Rusk.

Registration underway for master gardener program
      Orientation for Master Gardener training will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 9 in Room 102 of the Cherokee County Courthouse Annex in Rusk. The program provides training and educational opportunities in the horticultural arena and is open to adults of any age.

Democrats slate unity dinner Sept. 13
      Cherokee County Democrats will kick off the campaign season with a unity dinner and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at Eagle's Bluff Country Club in Bullard, off FM 344 West and CR 187. "We're looking forward to an exciting election in what has been an historic year," club president Joanna Reagan said. "Our unity dinner kicks off an ambitious fall campaign.

Master Gardener's course begins Sept. 9
      The 2008-09 Cherokee Master Gardener Course will kick off on Sept. 9. This year the classroom sessions of the course will be held at the courthouse annex in Rusk. Classroom meetings will be held from 10 a.m.-noon Tuesdays. Seven meetings will be held before Christmas and approxiately 10 in the winter and spring of 2009.

Pioneer Club meets at Rusk Church of Christ
      The Rusk Church of Christ will resume its Pioneer Club from 7-8 p.m. Sept. 3 for children ages two through high school. The club will meet every Wednesday. The church membership invites all area children to join. A fourth grader said a pioneer club "is learning about God and having fun doing it!

Tecula Cemetery marker dedication slated Sunday
      Cherokee County Historical Com- mission will dedicate an official historical Texas Cemetery Medallion at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, August 31. For 50 years, the Tecula Cemetery Association has celebrated an annual meeting at this cemetery on the Sunday before Labor Day. The cemetery is northeast of Jacksonville.

1st school day
     Little four-year-old Jessica Garcia is terrified of her first day at Rusk Primary School. She and the rest of her class were en route to the school cafeteria when her crying overcame her and she fell to the hall floor. Students at the school enjoyed a hamburger lunch. Jessica's Pre-K 4 teacher is Amanda Beard.

      The Rusk High School class of 1983 will hold it's 25th year class reunion, Sat Oct 18. A family picnic will be held from 10:30a.m.-2 p.m. at Jim Hogg Park. A reception is planned for 7 p.m.- midnight at The Castle on The Lake in Jacksonville.
