August sales tax reports show stable economy for most of Cherokee County
      All in all, the Cherokee County economy appears to be holding steady, with large cities posting gains and some smaller communities posting losses. The most important indicator to watch has been Jacksonville, which is the largest sales tax collector in the county.

Grand Jury indicts 26 in June
      Indictments were returned June 23 by a Cherokee County grand jury against 26 persons. These indictments include one criminal solicitation to commit capital murder; thefts, sexual assaults of children and possession of controlled substances.

Scrap metal sale could net $500,000
      PALESTINE - The Texas State Railroad Authority is selling scrap by the pound and stands to make up to $500,000 which will be used for track improvements. The TSR Authority, which has faced funding dilemmas, met in Palestine Aug. 14 for an update on the sale.

Nichols requests TDCJ to terminate contract
      State Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) has asked the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to terminate a contract with Direct Trailer, a private manufacturer using prison labor to assemble its products. "Prison work programs can be a good thing but not when they cost the jobs of law-abiding men and women," said Nichols.

Ranger Bill Quinn always worked 'til the job was done'
