New Indian head coach brings optimism, 'we' attitude to Jacksonville
      Steve Wells' office in the Jacksonville Field House is filled with reminders. The shelf on the right wall holds mementos of his two previous coaching stops at high schools in Mineola and Hooks. He has autographed trinkets from two players that he coached that went on to NFL success - Jeremiah Trotter and Wilbert Brown.

      The more things change, the more they stay the same in Cherokee County. While April showers bring May flowers, August heat means one thing: football is just around the corner. The Rusk Eagles, the Jacksonville Indians and the Alto Yellowjackets are all preparing for strong home seasons, hoping to thrill citizens in Cherokee County with their gridiron exploits.

Rusk Astros bow out at state
Team closes season at 17-3
      When asked how his team's state championship run unfolded, Rusk Astros head coach Dr. Jim Largent said simply: "Not well." Despite a strong season record, the Astros bowed out of 11-12-year-old state competition, held July 21-25 in New Boston.
