70th birthday
     Tommye Pickett, front left, was honored with a surprise 70th birthday party July 26 at Sadler's Restaurant. Family members came from Tyler, Houston, Henderson and Rusk for the minifamily reunion. Five generations of the family include in front, Mrs. Pickett; her mother Eva Lee Sartin; and her great-granddaughter, Jolie Smith; in back are her daughter, Kristin Smith; and her son, Terry Pickett.

      Christ the Redeemer Academy registration for the new school year begins Aug. 25. The school was rated excellent in academic progress for its first year of operation.

Lon Morris gives 6 scholarships to area students
      Lon Morris College held the first annual Trustees' Leadership Academy of Scholars from July 17-20, 2008. Six scholarships in the amount of $425 course waivers were awarded to David Catalan, Alayna Chavira, Kevin Quiroz, Clay Hamblett, Dietrich Dancer and Iliana Sotiriou.

Rhodes-Smith
     Lucile and Bill Rhodes of Rusk announce the engagement of their daughter, Sarah Jessica, to Jacob Bloxom Smith, son of Ann Bloxom Smith and Paul Wroten Smith of Monroe, la. Miss Rhodes is the granddaughter of Sarah and Comer Born of Lancaster. Both are graduates of Northwestern State University with Bachelor of Science degrees in theatre. They are employed in the entertainment field in Las Vegas, Nev. He is a sound designer and she is an actress, singer and dancer. She also teaches dancing. A fall wedding is planned.

Class of 2010 schedules back to school bash
      A back to school bash for the Rusk High School junior class will be held 8-10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12 at the Rusk City Pool. Class schedules may be picked up 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday at the high school. All members of the class are invited to attend. Activities include swimming, basketball, volleyball, music by CMB Music Productions and food.

McFarland-Halbert vows said
      Taylor Brooke Halbert and Andrew Justin McFarland, both Duke University graduates, were married Saturday June 7 at the Duke University Chapel in Durham, N.C. The Rev. Michael Dowd of Wytheville, Va., brother-inlaw of the groom, officiated. Music for the ceremony was provided by Dr. David A. Arcus on the chapel pipe organ.

Pear-eating pair stop traffic on Main Street
     On Monday, two fawns were spotted by reporter/ photographer Quinten Boyd as he photographed road construction on U.S. Highway 69 near Rusk Auto Parts. The pair darted through traffic on their way to the woods.

'Back 2 School' Fashion Show planned Aug. 14
      The Rusk Chamber of Commerce will hold their "Back 2 School" Fashion show on August 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m at the TJ Rusk Cafe and Hotel. Students will model clothes from The Hip Shack and Knox Ray Men's Wear. In addition, a "What Not to Wear" makeover will be provided by Texas Tanglers and The Hip Shack.

Rusk city bus serves seniors
      The city of Rusk maintains a transportation service for seniors. This service is provided only within the city's boundaries. Cost to board is $1 which entitles the rider to two stops, with 50 cents being charged for each additional stop. There is no additional charge for the return home. Church slates school clothes give-away Aug. 16
      Rusk Church of Christ will sponsor its school clothes give-away day from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 16. There are clothes in various sizes for school age children. Sizes are from approximately two years to adult. The church is still taking clothing donations. Members ask donors to make sure donations are clean, usable and suitable for school.

Big splash
     Colton Snively beats the heat and practices a back splash at the Rusk City Pool. The pool opens daily (except Sunday) at 12:30 p.m. It closes Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, 6:30 p.m. The pool will remain open through Labor Day weekend.
