United Methodist Army comes to Wells
      The United Methodist (UM) Army will visit Wells July 28-Aug. 1. The UM Army is composed of young people who pay their own way to visit communities and help with various projects. They are high school students and will work under adult supervision.

Ruskite appears on TV
      Sarah Jessica Rhodes, daughter of Lucy and Bill Rhodes of Rusk, will be featured on a talent competition show. The show airs each Tuesday night on Channel 56. She is expected to be featured at 8 p.m. June 17 with contestant Bruce Block, who she assists.

Juneteenth parade slated June 14
Parade lineup begins 11 a.m. Saturday
      The annual Juneteenth parade and Bradford School reunion are planned for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 14, in downtown Rusk. Parade participants will line up behind Austin Bank at 11 a.m. Bradford Alumni, state, county and local elected officials, as well as the public, are invited to participate.

TxDOT resumes $2.3 million resurfacing project in Rusk
Majority of work should be completed by end of July
      Texas Department of Transportation contractors returned to Rusk Monday to complete a $2.3 million resurfacing project that began in March on U.S. Highway 69. Work halted abruptly in April when an underground spring was discovered in a southbound lane of U.S. Highway 69.

10-hour days, 4-day work schedule will save fuel
CHEROKEE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
      Cherokee County Precincts 2 and 4 staffs now have a four day work week with employees working 10 hours a day. Commissioners Kevin Pierce and Byron Underwood said at the Monday morning commissioners court meeting they were going to the four-day work week to help with conservation of fuel costs.

      Coach Ted Patton presented a review of the athletic department at the Monday evening meeting of the Rusk school board. "My staff is in place and we all are excited about the coming football season," Coach Patton said. He outlined the progress being made in the athletic program.

      East Texas children are provided with a healthy lunch courtesy of the USDA free lunch program during the school year. But it is difficult for some parents to provide healthy meals during the summer months. A summer food nutrition program allows families to ensure that their children receive a healthy meal even when school is not in session.

Jubilee reading program begins at Alto
      Alto citizens will celebrate 50 years with the Texas Reading Program at the Stella Hill Library. The program called, Reading Jubilee, is planned for 9 a.m every Wednesday this summer. The Texas Reading Program is open to all persons ages 3-13.

      The Governing Body of Rusk State Hospital will meet at the hospital at 9 a.m. Friday, June 20 in the Quality Management Department Building, 501 Austin Room. The governing body meets each year to accept written and verbal reports presented by the hospital administration.

Church begins summer day camp
      Christ the Redeemer will begin summer day camp from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, June 9. The camp will be conducted Monday through Friday. Before and after hour care is available. Camp is $65 per week. There is a $30 registration fee. Additional fees will be charged for field trips. So much to see under under the sea is the theme for the camp.

Woodville Cemetery Fund dues are accepted by committee
      The Woodville Cemetery Fund Organization has announced that it is time to pay cemetery dues. Each family is asked to pay $20 for the upkeep of the three cemeteries in the community. These cemeteries are Pleasant Holly, Session and Woodville.

July 4th celebration planned for Rusk
      The Rusk Rotary Club will sponsor a tribute to all area peacetime and wartime veterans. From 7-9 p.m. Thursday, July 3 there will be a "picnic in the park" at Jim Hogg Park. This event is dedicated to peacetime and wartime veterans. The East Texas community is invited to bring covered dishes, cold dishes, sandwiches, desserts, non-alcoholic drinks and tables and chairs.
