Singers of Salvation
     Rusk First Baptist Church's Singers of Salvation will be on a mini-tour June 12-14. The are scheduled to sing the National Anthem to open the Astros game in Houston Thursday night. They are also scheduled to sing for the Governor in the Capitol that weekend. The choir is directed by Tim Timmons. Jason Hoffman is student minister and Lee Welch is church pastor. Tour sponsors are Laura Christopher, Brandi Franks, Tammy Greene and Rachel Thompson.

Wedding plans announced
      Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Maitland of Carthage announce the engagement of their daughter, Ursula Jill, to Sjohn Lee Kelly of Nacogdoches. He is the son of Gene Kelly of Rising Star and the late Jeannine Kelly. Miss Maitland is a graduate of Carthage High School, Panola College and Lamar Institute of Technology in Beaumont.

Lyons-Sheffield
     Mr. and Mrs. Steve Lyons of Alto announce the engagement of their daughter Kayla Marie Lyons to Jovan Joseph (Joe) Sheffield, son of Lewayne and Edith Sheffield of Colmesneil. The wedding will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Alto Community Fellowship in Alto.

Big cabbage
     Kaylynn Hinson, Alto third grader, has been nominated for the Bonnie Plant Cabbage Contest. She had the biggest cabbage of the Alto third grade, weighing 18 pounds. Bonnie Plants chooses a student from each state to receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Retirement
     Don Reid, custodial supervisor at Rusk State Hospital, is congratulated on his retirement by Lynda Roberson, director of residential services. Mr. Reid retired April 30 after 24 years at Rusk State Hospital. A party was held May 9.

Success story
     When Marie Adams first arrived at Lexington Place Nursing and Rehabilitation, she received maximum assistance to get out of bed and into a wheel chair. She could only walk two or three steps with maximum assistance and required much help to get dressed for the day. With the help of therapist Brent Little she has gained her strength and left the nursing home. She is able to walk independently with a walker.
