Alto seemed poised to take control of the three-game regional quarterfinal series against West Sabine Friday but games two and three in the series swung against the Mean Sting. Alto opened the series with a 6-3 win over West Sabine in a game that saw Alto go ahead 4-0 before giving up three runs in the top of the sixth inning. More ... Fourth-grade students from Wells Elementary School took a field trip to Space Center Houston and the Johnson Space Center May 9. The field trip included a stop at the Sonny Carter Training Facility's Neutral Bouyancy Laboratory, where astronauts train for weightless space walks and missions in a tank that holds 6.2 million gallons of water. Alto's string of hits in the fourth inning gave the Lady Jackets a 2-1 win in game one of the three-game regional semifinal series against Detroit Tuesday at the Mineola Youth Foundation softball park in Mineola. Head Basketball Coach Augustus Moore III awards senior Devon Patton the Cody Sell Memorial Award during the Alto Sports Banquet May 15. The Cody Sell Award, given to an Alto High School basketball player, is named after a 1989-1990 member of Alto's area championship basketball team who died in the summer of 1990. Patton played football, baseball and ran track in addition to playing basketball. He also won the Track High-Point Award. More ... Alto Senior Lance Low received the David Holcombe "We Believe" Award. Low, an all-around student who also plays baseball, competes in track, excels academically and has enjoyed success at the Cherokee County Junior Livestock Show, also shared Head Hunter Award honors with Clayton Scott. More ... Senior Michael Parker shows his state championship medal at the Alto Sports Banquet Thursday evening. The members of the football team were given their medals during the banquet. More ... Alto Head Football Coach/Athletic Director Keith Gardner presents Tarlandus Mitchell the Best Male All-Around Athlete Award. Mitchell was quarterback and defensive back for the football team, played basketball, baseball and ran track. He was also given the Most Versatile award, Football MVP and shared outstanding defensive back honors with Michael Parker. Mitchell plans to play football at Navarro College next year. LaQuendal Tyler won the Best Female All-Around Athlete Award, but was not present to receive it. More ... Alto Coach Clint Gardner presents Clint Dover the Ted Moore Award. The Ted Moore Award is presented to an athlete of strong character, who is coachable and plays at least two sports.
