Rocky Springs Missionary Baptist Church prepares 160th homecoming
Oldest church in Cherokee County celebrates long history of missions, ministry
      After the Cherokee Indians were removed, the Republic of Texas Legislature provided for the occupation of vacant lands and pioneers began to move to the East Texas area. Most of the pioneers settled near the Neches Saline Road which went through a valley approximately one-half mile east of the present-day location of the Rocky Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

Elvis tribute concert to benefit RFL
      Larry Stilwell, one of the most sought after Elvis Presley tribute artists, will be in Rusk Friday, May 23 to perform a concert to benefit the Cherokee County Relay For Life. Mr. Stilwell, from Dallas, has performed regionally at the Gaylord Texan and for corporate events such as the J.C. Penney Expo, Mary Kay events in Dallas and for the Dr Pepper Corporation in Dallas.

New gazebo almost complete
     Electrical work for a ceiling fan and benches are all that is needed to complete a new gazebo on the south side of the courthouse square in Rusk. County Judge Chris Davis said the county purchased a vinyl-clad kit, which was assembled at no cost by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's work squad. Officer Rick Bobbitt, standing in back, said his crew is also working on some book cases for the county's law library.

Paula Abel retires after 27 years
     A retirement party April 22 at Rusk State Hospital honored Paula Abel, RN. She retired April 30 after 27 years of service. She is congratulated by Ed Bruce, director of nurses.

Central High HDC raffle
     Marie Yancy of Beaumont won a raffle for the handmade quilt made by the Central High Home Demonstration Club. Club members include from left: Doris Hartman, Anna Oliphint, Mary Helm, Marie Yancey (Quilt Winner), Margaret Griffith, Emal Rogers, Virginia Singletary, Bonnie Navarro, and Hallene Thomson. Club members recently celebrated an annual homecoming.

Top students named for Alto High School
      Clayton Scott, valedictorian, and Lance Low, salutatorian will lead the Alto High School graduating class in ceremonies May 31 at Jacket Stadium. Mr. Scott is the son of Kim and Mindy Scott and Mr. Low is the son of Randy and Paula Low.
