Elderly fan program is underway

      The Rusk Rotary Club in observance of Elder Awareness Month is working with Harry's Building Materials and Wallace-Thompson Hardware in providing fans to elderly in the area before the heat of summer takes hold. Both stores will offer 20 inch box fans at considerably-reduced prices for this effort.

Band director, principal honored

      Gary Robbins and Ricky Hassell were honored at the Tuesday evening, May 13, Rusk ISD board of trustees meeting. Both are retiring from the district. Mr. Robbins has 20 years of service and Mr. Hassell 23 years. Mr Robbins is high school band director and head of the music department; and Mr. Hassell is high school principal.

Rusk will honor veterans on Memorial Day
      Rusk's annual Memorial Day service is planned for 10 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Monument on the north side of the courthouse lawn. Frank Bowden will serve as master of ceremonies. The Rev. Donnie Timmons will offer the invocation. Connie Hamilton will sing the National Anthem. The Rev. Arvil Moseley will be the speaker and Debra Richards will present special music.

Ground breaking planned for Alto Elementary
      A ground-breaking ceremony is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at the future site of the Alto Elementary School, located across the driveway from the Alto ISD Administration Building. "It will be a one-of-a-kind groundbreaking ceremony," said Dr. Ray DeSpain, Alto ISD superintendent.

      The religious writing organization, Inspirational Writers Alive! will sponsor a new Tyler IWA! chapter. The new chapter will meet at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Tyler Christian Fellowship, 3421 Old Jacksonville Highway, one-fourth mile off Loop 323. The group is interdenominational.

      Freddye White will celebrate her 90th birthday this weekend. Her official birthday is May 28, but she said the doctor made a mistake and her real birthday is May 26.

      The Texas Department of Criminal Justice recruiter is screening correctional officer applicants at the Skyview Unit in Rusk beginning at 7:45 a.m. May 21-22. Interested persons are asked to go to www.tdcj.state.tx.us to schedule for screening.

Christians Against Substance Abuse program offered in Rusk
      Persons with drug or alcohol problems are invited to attend Christians Against Substance Abuse (CASA) group meetings at 7 p.m. each Tuesday at the Rusk Church of Christ, 397 S. Main St., Rusk. The program assists in freeing persons from alcohol and chemical dependency. The approach utilizes instructional , peer discussions and 12-step group approach.

Rusk student will participate in NASA internship program
      Charles Melton of Rusk High School will participate in a week's summer internship at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston. Nominated by Robert Nichols he has been selected as one of 350 high school juniors from across Texas to be part of High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS).

      Commissioner Todd Staples encourages families who wish to apply for the Texas Department of Agriculture's Family Land Heritage Program to get started on their applications now. The Family Land Heritage Program recognizes farms and ranches that have been in continuous agricultural production by the same family for at least 100 years or more.
