California Baptist University
     The California Baptist University choir and orchestra will be presented in concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Rusk First Baptist Church. The public is invited to attend, said Tim Timmons, minister of music.

Engagement told
     The engagement of Ashley Renee Archer and Julian Michael Perrigo-Jimenez has been announced. The daughter of Ricky and Beverly Wallis of Gulf Breeze, Fla., she is a Rusk High School and Stephen F. Austin State University graduate. Her grandmother, Sandra Akin, resides in Rusk. The future groom is the son of Michael Jimenez of Folsom, Calif. and Susan Perrigo of Sacramento, Calif. The couple will be married at 5 p.m. Sept. 6 in Pensacola Beach, Fla.

McClosky-Yeley
     The engagement and approaching marriage of Laura Aleen McClosky and Justin Daniel Yeley has been announced. Miss McClosky is the daughter of Lori J. McClosky of Rusk and the late Brian J. McClosky Sr. Mr. Yeley is the son of John and Carren Yeley of Jacksonville and Richard and Jonette Renteria of Roundrock. The couple will be married at 2 p.m. May 17 at the Sacred Heart Chapel at the Rusk Railroad Park.

      Maggie Lee Smith and Joshua Michael Hulstine, both of Jacksonville, were united in marriage at 6 p.m. March 29 at Beall Chapel Baptist Church in Jacksonville. The bride is the daughter of Mike and Pennie Smith. The groom is the son of Kathy Hulstine and Johnny Hulstine.

Youth volunteer time to community
      In Cherokee County, one group of children is going above and beyond to make a considerable difference in their community. They are learning to be helpful citizens through their volunteer work, such as delivering Meals on Wheels and learning useful skills through competition.

Beryl Dailey notes 90th birthday
      Beryl Dailey, of Rusk was honored on April 19 with a cookout and party in celebration of her 90th birthday. The party was held at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Dale Peterson. Theme of the party, decorations and cake was a helicopter tour of Dallas.

Fair on the Square planners need help
      Volunteers are needed to help with Kids Day at the Rusk Fair on the Square May 23-24.Volunteers will work an hour at a time. Teens and adults can help with the arcade, wear a cartoon costume, take pictures and help decorate and clean up. Card tables are also needed. Persons loaning the tables can take them to the chamber office with their names taped to the bottom.

Banquet will honor retiring band directors
      Gary Robbins and Mike Kellogg are retiring at the end of this school year after serving 29 years each as band directors. In an effort to honor them the Rusk Band Boosters have extended an invitation to invite all former band students, band directors and band booster members to the annual RHS Band Banquet at 6:30 p.m.

Jordan Beard named to Who's Who
      Rusk native, Jordan Beard, was nominated for the 2008 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Mr. Beard was one of 39 students from Howard Payne University receiving this honor. He is the son of David and Vicki Beard of Rusk.

Resignations accepted staff hired by RISD
      Following an executive session Monday evening the Rusk ISD board approved the employment of Michael Miller as band director and director of the music department to replace retiring Gary Robbins. Jason Scott Schwartz was employed as high school principal to replace Ricky Hassell, who is also retiring. Mr.

Rusk teacher receives grant for field trip
      Heather Beck, Rusk Intermediate School fourth grade teacher, has received a $1,000 Target teacher field trip grant. She plans to use the money to take 40 students to the SciPort Discovery Center in Shreveport, La. The Target Field Trip Grants program was launched in September 2006.
