Relay For Life blitz planned April 5 in Cherokee County
      Cherokee County Relay For Life volunteers will be out in force on Saturday, April 5 conducting a number of fundraising events to benefit Relay For Life. The weekend actually kicks off on Friday, April 4, with a hamburger cookout by the Life Savers team of Rusk State Hospital. They will prepare and grill their own burger meal with all the trimmings.

Temple Foundation awards $24,000 for new van
      Cherokee County Mental Retardation Association directors met March 14 at the sheltered workshop where positive reports for preceding months were presented. Bill Reyes, program manager for service to the facility's largest consumer work group, Wilsonart Laminate Production, presented the year's work to date and expectations for the future.

Cherokee County Jr. Livestock Show opens this weeklend
Shop entries have doubled this year
      BY GLORIA JENNINGS Shop entries for the 59th annual Cherokee County Junior Livestock Show have doubled since last year's 65 entries. This year there are 129. The show's events will get underway Thursday afternoon at the show barn in Jacksonville.

2nd annual bridal fair
     Highlighting the Rusk Chamber of Commerce's second annual bridal fair March 1 was a fashion show. Assisting with the fashions were The Hip Shack of Rusk and Weddings A to Z in Tyler. More than 30 local businesses contributed to the bridal fair. Businesses participating included flower shops, bakeries, jewelry stores, baskets, cruises, carriage rides, financial aides, bridal planning books and location owners.

Bank, Perkins family sponsor scholarships for state employees children
      Scholarship applications for The Citizens 1st Bank/ Perkins Family Foundation Scholarship must be delivered or post-marked by March 31. The Citizens 1st Bank/ Perkins Family Foundation Scholarship Fund provides educational scholarships for children of state employees in Smith, Nacogdoches and Cherokee counties.

Wells man receives honor
      Seth Hamilton was inducted into the Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society Feb. 22. Membership in Alpha Chi is the highest recognition that Stephen F. Austin State University can confer upon a student. What separates Alpha Chi from other college honor societies is that membership is obtained by invitation only.

Forest landowners meet April 12
      The Trinity-Neches Forest Landowners Assn. (TNFLA) will hold its spring meeting at 8:30 p.m. April 12 at the Athens, Texas Freshwater Fishery in Henderson County. Discussion topics include water rights issues, oil/pipeline easements and the forest landowner, Certified Steward Award presentations and an overview of the fishery.
