Fired city bookkeeper posts bond

Doris Robinson: Former water department bookkeeper for the city of Rusk. Doris Robinson, 60, of Jacksonville, longtime city of Rusk employee, posted bond and was released shortly after 3 p.m. Monday from the Cherokee County jail.

Mrs. Robinson posted a $10,000 bond on charges of theft of property between $20,000 and $100,000.

She was indicted earlier this month by a Cherokee County Grand Jury on charges stemming from alleged theft of the city's water department funds prior to the fall of 2006.

While the indictment charges missing funds between $20,000-$100,000, sources say the missing funds could be as much as $150,000.

Early on in the investigation, Texas Ranger Rudy Flores was asked to participate in the inquiry.

The time frame was narrowed to a twoyear period spanning 2004-06.

An independent, forensic audit was performed at the request of District Attorney Elmer Beckworth.

Mrs. Robinson began her duties at city hall in July 1994 as a utility billing clerk. When she was terminated from city employment in September 2006, she was employed as a utility billing clerk/bookkeeper.

City Manager Mike Murray said, "On the advice of the district attorney, I cannot comment on any on-going investigation."

Other city employees would not comment. Mrs. Robinson is married to Jacksonville City Councilman Hubert Robinson.

A trial date has not been set.
