for patients
     Cassi Fletcher and Libby Berry, along with their classmates at Rusk Intermediate School, are helping raise money in the Pennies for Patients campaign. The program benefits The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. For three weeks, students have brought in spare change for people with blood cancers such as leukemia. Leukemia strikes more children and young adults under the age of 20 than any other type of cancer. After just two weeks, Rusk Intermediate students have contributed $593.22. They will finish the campaign this week.

Accelerated Readers
     Students at Alto Elementary who accomplished their point goal for the fourth six weeks in the Accelerated Reader Program were eligible for a $20 cash drawing. Winners for this six weeks include from left, fourth grader Anne Cox, third grader Calista Lytle, second grader Christopher McClendon and first grader Devin Guinn.

JMS wins 2nd place for UIL play
      Jacksonville Middle School's production of "The Girl in the Mirror" won a second place trophy in UIL competition Feb. 22 at Whitehouse. In addition to the second place trophy and silver medals the students won three acting awards and one technical award.

Scholarship announced
      Rusk High School senior, Joseph Michael Marchetti, is among seniors from 60 Texas high schools to be awarded a fouryear $15,000 college scholarship. The award was presented Feb.

JHS band receives UIL honors
      Jacksonville High School band students recently attended UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest and won 31 medals. The contest, sponsored by the University Interscholastic League and hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University, was attended by almost 2,000 band students from East Texas.

Fire safety revisited
     Rusk Volunteer Firefighter Terry Joe Phillips explains the fire hazards of a space heater during a recent demonstration of the traveling fire safety house trailer at Rusk Intermediate School. The traveling fire safety house is used by the state's fire marshal to teach fire safety and awareness to school children.
