Joe Daniel discusses plants at recent club meeting
BY BILLY WATSON SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR

Joe Daniel, County extension horticulturist, presented a program on plants at the Nov. 29 Lions Club meeting. He talked about plants for a flower garden such as the Lotus plant. Several pages of pictures of flower plants of various colors and information on how to grow certain flowers were shown members. He discussed the master gardener program available in 110 Texas counties. He said there are classes offered for 10 or more people.

Guests attending were Boots Burfoot, Alica Oliver and Ronnie Levine. A letter was received from the Birmingham Health Care residents thanking the Lions for their gift of candy. Also a letter was received from the East Texas Goat Assn. thanking the club for their invitation to speak to the club. International Lions Club President Jimmy M. Ross wrote the club to congratulate members for outstanding achievements during 2006-07.

Members were asked to participate in the holiday grocery raffle, which is sponsored by the Rusk Lions Club and Brookshire Bros. Tickets are $1 each and prizes are grocery purchases at Brookshire Bros. in the amount of $100, $75 and $25. Drawings will be on Dec. 20. All Lions were asked to pick up tickets from Lion Bobbie Burch. The funds from all ticket sales go to the Rusk Lions Club for club projects.

Lion Tim Timmons announced that the Leo Club will pick up trash again this year around Loop 62 and U.S. Highway 69 around town from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 and 8. Lion Tim goes with them but he is asking other Lions to be volunteers in this project. He said the Leo Club vests have arrived.
