Republican Club plans

Christmas party

U.S. Representative (Dist. 5) Jeb Hensarling will be guest speaker for the Cherokee County Republican Club's Christmas meeting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 10. The meeting will be at the Norman Activity Center, 526 E. Commerce St., Jacksonville.

This is a covered dish dinner meeting and everyone is encouraged to bring a covered dish.

Tamales will be offered

for sale Dec. 9

The December homemade tamale sale at Sacred Heart Catholic Church is planned to begin at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 9. Price is $7 per dozen. To place an order in advance call the Sacred Heart Tamale Hotline at (903) 683-1853.

A Book Cottage opens

in Rusk

A pre-grand opening sale will begin at noon Wednesday, Dec. 5, at A Book Cottage, U.S. Highway 69 S. Until Dec. 22 the cottage will be open Wednesday through Saturdays for shoppers.

A Book Cottage is a specialty book store with first editions, signed editions, uncorrected proofs and other collectable books. Some hard to find Christmas books are available.

Joyce Caldwell is the owner. The cottage is located south of the Valero station in the little yellow house with the white picket fence.

Wells competes in UIL

Academic meet

Wells students competed in the South Zone UIL Academic competition Nov. 28-29. Winner of the meet was Douglas ISD, first place; and Centerville, second place.

Wells received 118 team points in the elementary school; 184 points, junior high; and 302 points total points. Douglas received 994 total points; Centerville, 503.5 points; Apple Springs, 363; Etoile, 121; Kennard, 426; Neches, 261.5; and Oakwood, 168.

Rusk 1st Methodist

presents annual cantata

The annual Christmas cantata at the Rusk First United Methodist Church will be presented at the 11 a.m. Dec. 9 worship service.

Birda Parker is director for the cantata, "Bethlehem Morning." Others include Nancy Guinn, narrator; and John Williams, instrumentalist.

The public is invited to attend the event.

Lunch will be served in fellowship hall following the cantata. Also, planned for the day will be a pie sale to benefit the church's annual apportionments.

Church plans program

"An Unexpected Answer" will be presented at the First Church on the Hill at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 and 15 and 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 16. The Christmas program is written and directed by the church drama department. There is no charge and the public is invited to attend any of the programs. Republicans name new

county chairman

Josie D. Schoolcraft is the new Cherokee County Republican Party chairman.

She replaces Jerry Ayers, who resigned.

Alto Christmas Parade

slated for Monday

The Alto Christmas Parade will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, beginning at the Alto Missionary Baptist Church.

The parade will run from the church down SH 294 to SH 21. The parade will then turn east on SH 21 toward U.S. Hwy 69, then will circle the block and conclude in front of the post office.

The parade will feature floats from the Alto Volunteer Fire Department, several area churches and marching by the Alto High School Band and Boy Scout Troop 405.

The Weches Volunteer Fire Department will transport Santa Claus at the end of the parade.

The theme for this year's parade is "An Old Time Family Christmas."

Hollywood returns to Rusk

An open casting call will be held in Rusk on Saturday, Dec. 22. Primrose Productions is in search of a main character for an upcoming family-oriented film which is still in its early stages of development. The main character is a 10-14 year-old Caucasian boy. In a letter from Bob Hudgins, director of the Texas Film Commission, the film is identified as being set in Texas with plans being made to film on location in Texas. The casting company is also looking for other characters for the movie as well. Audition times have not yet been announced, though Bob Goldsberry, executive director of the Rusk Chamber of Commerce said he expects the auditions to be held between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m at the Cherokee Civic Theatre.
