Jacksonville continues slide with lackluster sales tax growth; Rusk posts 9.62% gain
      Sales activity is easing statewide, and the largest retail center in Cherokee County is following suit. Sales tax returns for the city of Jacksonville were down 4.57 percent for the month of October, when compared to October 2006.

Elkhart man dies in fiery crash
      An Elkhart man was killed Sunday morning when his 1987 Ford pickup truck crashed into a fence on FM 347 south of Jacksonville and caught fire, said Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Jimmy Dunklin. Charles Ray, 65 of Elkhart, was killed by the flames.

Planning & Zoning will consider zoning request on land near historic homes
Residents are asking city to change meeting time because of parade conflict
      A planning and zoning commission meeting at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, will coincide with the annual Rusk Christmas parade and lighting ceremony in downtown Rusk. Persons living on Copeland and Fifth streets are in an uproar over a request scheduled to be discussed at the meeting.

      In an effort to survive hunting season, deer tend to go nocturnal and move frequently during the months of October, November and December. The result, according to a report released by the Insurance Information Institute, is an increase in deer-vehicle collisions.
