NEWS parade Dec. 10 The Alto Lions Club will sponsor the annual Alto Christmas parade at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10. Those wishing to participate are encouraged to meet at the Missionary Baptist Church, 107 Elkhart, at 5:30 p.m. the day of the parade. Theme for this year's parade is "A Family Christmas." Plans are to have the Christmas parade annually on the second Monday of each December. The Alto Lions Club meets weekly at noon at the Stella Hill Memorial Library. The public is invited to attend. Veteran Day ceremony will be held Nov. 12 The annual Veteran Day ceremony at the Cherokee County monument will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 rather than on Nov. 11 this year. Frank Bowden will be master of ceremonies and County Attorney Craig Caldwell will be speaker. Karla Thrash will sing the National Anthem. The Rev. Orville Mosley of Christ the Redeemer Church will offer the invocation. The Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor the balloon release. Persons who would like to honor a friend or loved one may contact a member of the auxiliary or call (903) 683-5985. Virginia Goforth will sing a medley of military songs. The benediction will be offered by Chaplain James Dishman. Open house will follow at the VFW Hall at the intersection of Fourth Street and U.S. Highway 69 S. Each year veterans' names are read and balloons are released in their honor. Persons who would like to honor a friend or loved one, may contact a member of the Ladies Auxiliary or call (903) 683 5985. Proceeds from this fundraiser are used for the VFW and Auxiliary Cancer Aid and Research program. Memorabilia will be displayed at the VFW Post 3406 at the corner of Loop 62 and U.S. Highway 69 S. Following the activities on the square, the public is invited to visit the post and review a display that is presented each year. Alzheimer's support group meets 1st Thursday The Alzheimer's support group will resume its meetings at noon Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Southern Cherokee Federal Credit Union. RSH resale shop is open 1st, 2nd Fridays The Resale Shop operated by the Volunteer Council for the Rusk State Hospital, Inc. is open 10 a.m. -3 p.m., at 545 Castner St, in Rusk on the first and second Friday of each month. All proceeds benefit the patients and programs at Rusk State Hospital- For additional information, please call (903) 683-7327. 8th grade parents night planned for Nov. 6 An eighth grade students and parents/guardians night is planned for 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday Nov. 6 at the Rusk Junior High cafeteria. Information will be provided about advancement requirements of the Texas Student Success initiative (SSI), testing timeline, success strategies for school and tips for parents to use at home. Refreshments will be served and childcare will be provided in the gym for children, nine months and older. Other information is available by Turkey Shoot is Nov. 10 The annual Par 3 Turkey Shoot will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10 at Birmingham Forest Golf Club.
