Jacksonville's sluggish retail sales continue to hurt the local economy
      The long, hot summer caused a chill with retail sales in Jacksonville. The largest retail center in Cherokee County posted 3.58 percent drop in sales during July, compared to the same time frame a year ago. Year-to-date, Jacksonville's sales are down 6.62 percent.

Commissioners seek TDCJ help

      County Judge Chris Davis will seek assistance from Texas Department of Criminal Justice work crews in renovation work at a county building in Jacksonville. The building formerly was owned by the county and the City of Jacksonville. Jacksonville donated its portion of the building to the county.

Property use studied

      Rusk ISD Board Chairman David Fulton appointed Britt Patterson and Rodney Hugghins to study use of school property by youth teams. Vicki Beard asked for permission for a youth baseball team to use electricity at the school field for practice.

Puppy mill' owner sent to state hospital
      A 51-year-old Gilmer resident, Teresa Dawson, has been order to spend 120 days at Rusk State Hospital. Ms. Dawson has been charged with cruelty to animals and the surviving 244 dogs awarded to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

      A unique celebration is planned by two pillars in the Rusk business community. They are Southern Cherokee Federal Credit Union, established in March, 1960, and Cherokee County Teachers Federal Credit Union, established in 1955.

      In March, 1955, the Cherokee County Teachers Federal Credit Union was chartered to serve the public school employees, credit union employees and members of their families. In 2005 the CCTFCU marked a milestone with the grand opening of their new facility, located on U.S. Highway 69 north of Rusk.
