Alto man at-large after jail break

MARCUESE TYLER
Officers are still searching for an Alto High School 2002 graduate who escaped Sept. 25 from the Nacogdoches County jail. Marcuese Eugene Tyler, 24, of Lufkin, formerly of Alto, is still at large. His sister, Laquisha Monque Tyler, 18, of Alto, was arrested Sunday afternoon by Cherokee County deputies for allegedly assisting in the escape. Authorities believe that she assisted with his transportation from Nacogdoches to Alto.

Mr. Tyler was in the Nacogdoches

County Jail on several charges for aggravated assault

with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, evading arrest and probation violation.

Distinctive features include facial hair and tattoos. He is five foot nine inches and weighs 180 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Two other inmates that escaped with Mr. Tyler were Antonio Martinez, 20, of Nacogdoches and Jose Guillermo Portillo, 32, of Russellville, Ark. They were captured Thursday in San Antonio and transported back to the Nacogdoches County Jail.

Nacogdoches Sheriff Thomas Kerss said, "All were considered dangerous." Sheriff Kerss said, "Hector Navejar, a correctional officer working at the jail, was arrested Sept. 26, for his involvement in assisting in the escape." Mr. Navejar was an acquaintance of Mr. Martinez and was paid with drugs for his help.

Officers became suspicious when the jail employee's cell phone number showed up in records of jail phone conversations.

"Navejar apparently lied about the inmates being accounted for during cell counts and having seen them at breakfast," Sheriff Kerss said.

Mr. Navejar had been working at the Nacogdoches County jail since June. Sheriff Kerss said it is believed that the two Hispanics were trying to leave the country.

Helping with the arrest of the two suspects in San Antonio were Texas Rangers and local law enforcement officers from San Antonio and Bexar County. An Associated Press story said the two men were captured after they were seen leaving a church.

Arrested for hindering apprehension, a third degree felony, were the church's pastor, Angel Serrano, and Mr. Martinez's parents, Gerardo and Ernestina Martinez.
