NEWS Former U.S. Rep. Charles Wilson recovering after heart transplant Former U.S. Rep. Charles Wilson, 74, who served 1973-97, is resting comfortably at a Houston hospital after receiving a heart transplant Monday. Mr. Wilson received the call Sunday that a donor heart was available. A new movie will be released this Christmas starring Tom Hanks as Charles Wilson. "Charlie Wilson's War" is based on Mr. Wilson's support in the 1980s of the CIA and the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan during their struggle against Russia. Girl Scouts slate recruitment night in Rusk Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas will have a membership drive at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 at the Rusk Intermediate School cafeteria. Girl Scouts' program is for all girls, ages 5-17 or in grades K-12. Adults wanting to make a difference in a girl's life or girls interested in fun and friendship through Girl Scouts are invited to attend the Thursday evening meeting. Republican Club sets meeting Oct. 1 Texas State Comptroller Susan Combs will be special guest speaker at the 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1 meeting of the Cherokee County Republican Club at The Woods of Jacksonville restaurant, 14881 U.S. Highway 79 E. FEMA's office open in Jacksonville The Mobile Disaster Recovery Center, 210 W. Larissa St., Jacksonville has reopened and will remain open through Monday, Oct. 29, to allow local citizens more time to register for disaster assistance. Already 240 residents have registered with FEMA for disaster assistance. FEMA and the State of Texas have mailed $439,552 in disaster grant checks to county residents. |
