LIONS CLUB Lion President Vic Whadford asked the Rusk Lion Club members if anyone knew when their club was formed? The correct answer was Oct. 24, 1940. Corry Wallace was the last charter member before his death a few years ago. Leo W. Tosh was the first president and Morris Elliott is the club's oldest surviving member. The Alto Lion's Club was the sponsoring club and the Jacksonville Lion's Club was chartered in 1939. Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) ranked best among non-governmental organizations (NGO) worldwide, according to the London based Financial Times. From 34 global organizations, LCIF came in first for its execution of programs, demonstrated accountability, communications internally and externally, program adaptability to the surrounding community and understanding the goals of its corporate supporters. LCIF beat out Rotary International, Habitat for Humanity, UNESCO and UNICEF, just to name a few on the list. Donations to LCIF can be done online to www.lions clubs.org, click on About LCIF in the lower right corner, then click on Donate Online on the right side of the page. Ms. Burch will have parent orientation night at the Lion's Den on Saturday afternoon. Artys Brown announced Oct. 20 would be the day to select the Best Lion in Texas. Tim Timmons reported on the formation of the new Leo Club. High school counselor Terri Daniel is helping him again this year to form the new club. Membership drives will be conducted for three days at both lunch periods. Registration forms are available and dues will be $10 per member, but if they are a new member there will be a $10 yearly fee. Courtney Foreman will be the Leo president, and David Robbins, vice-president. This year the sponsor of the Leo's will be Mrs. Hoffner. |
