Mabank Panthers pounce Eagles 58-21
Panthers' passing game sails over Rusk

Horrace Lewis (26) discusses strategy with Marcell Johnson (34) before Friday's 58-21 shellacking at the hands of the Mabank Panthers. Lewis was hurt during a defensive play, leaving Johnson to carry the rushing load.
MABANK - The future for the Rusk Eagles is uncertain as the team licks its wounds from Friday's 58-21 loss to the Mabank Panthers.

"We just did a poor job," said Head Coach Wayne Mahaffey.

Mabank scored at will in the passing game. Panther quarterback Kolton Browning completed 16 of 30 passes for 372 yards and four touchdowns. Mabank only ran 25 rushing plays, most of which came in the fourth quarter.

Horrace Lewis suffered an injury on a defensive play in the first quarter, forcing Marcell Johnson to take all of the handoffs for the rest of the game.

Lewis' injury was minor and he is expected to return to the lineup Friday.

"We had several injuries causing us to have to reshuffle," Coach Mahaffey said.

Rusk scored on a 76-yard touchdown pass from Demarcus Skinner to Bobby McDuff in the second quarter. Rusk was able to pull within 14 points in the second quarter on touchdowns scored by Jared Colville and an eight yard pass from Skinner to Chance Cleaver.

Late in the second quarter, Rusk trailed Mabank 35-21, but Mabank drove 65 yards in eight plays to score on a Browning one-yard quarterback sneak play to put the Panthers ahead 42-21.

The second half was all Mabank, as the Panthers scored on a 67 yard pass from Browning to Davis Kiker, and three field goals by Michael Blackburn.

Coach Mahaffey said despite the fact Mabank has more depth than Rusk, the bottom line was that Rusk did not play well.

"We have nine two-way starters, they have 22 starters," Coach Mahaffey said. "It's easy to use the heat, two-way starters and injuries as excuses. We just didn't play well. It won't always be that way. The kids aren't going to quit. We're just going to keep trying to find a solution.

"It's not how you start, it's how you finish."

Rusk returns to Eagle Stadium Friday to face Jermie Calhoun and the Van Vandals.

Calhoun is touted as one of the top running backs in the nation. He rushed for 1,601 yards on 185 carries last season.

Despite his notoriety and accomplishments on the field, Van went 6-4 last season, missing the playoffs.

Coach Mahaffey said Calhoun is a great running back.

"You don't shut him down," he said. "There is no such thing as shutting him down. We hope to control him and shut down everything else."

Coach Mahaffey said Van is well coached and has a good offensive line.

Rusk will host the Van Vandals at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Eagle Stadium. The game will be broadcast on KTLU 1580 AM with the pregame show beginning at 7:03.
