Texas State Railroad transfer is complete
"First, I believe in the preservation of our history, our heritage. Trains are my passion, therefore it is my privilege to be involved in their operation," he said. "Many of our younger generation know nothing of trains or the role they have played in the early development of the United States. By way of entertaining them with trains, we can help educate them to the value of these magnificent antique locomotives. And also, with the kid delightful, Thomas the Tank and other projects, we hope to bring a powerful message for young people's entertainment and their education." The widely known presentation of Thomas the Tank has brought in from 10,000-20,000 visitors at other train facilities, including the Durango at Silverton and the North Carolina Smokey Mountains. "With extensive promotion and publicity, we hope to bring thousands to this area for these events," said Mr. Harper. After his number one objective, the preservation of history, the new owner made it clear that "this is our train. There is no 'I' in team." He praised the teamwork of Texas Parks and Wildlife since the renewed operation of TSR as a facility of tourism and recreation in 1976. "We are pleased that so many of the former staff have elected to remain with us. For reason of retirement benefits and insurance, we understand that several were unable to continue," he explained. Approximately 28 of 38 employees will remain. A major consideration in his philosophy for work, after teamwork, is communication. "No matter what the issue may be, it is essential to talk it out. Otherwise, nothing gets resolved. I will want all of you, the staff and all of you who support us at the community level, to always feel free to ask for discussion on any topic," he said. As guests were welcomed, including State Rep. and Mrs. Chuck Hopson, he offered his deep gratitude to everyone who had been a part in making his presence and ownership possible. He introduced his key staff members and acknowledged citizen support through more than one and one-half years of negotiating with the State of Texas. "We want everyone to be involved in support of our train," he said. On a note of humor, he concluded, "Now, let's get together and fill up that hole (under the track)." His talk was interrupted at several points by energized rounds of applause. The informal meet and greet reception was staged near the boarding area of the TSR starting at 9:30 a.m. Train enthusiasts visited prior to and following Mr. Harper's address. The long awaited contract between American Heritage and the TSR Railroad Authority was finalized and signed at 6:06 p.m. Friday in Palestine. Also present Saturday morning were Rusk and Palestine city officials. |
