Labor Day will be a day of work
Rusk, Alto students are required to report to class

Despite the woes of parents, Labor Day will be a day of work for all students in the Rusk and Alto Independent School Districts.

Students at Jacksonville, New Summerfield and Wells will rest from their labors on Monday.

Truancy rules will be enforced for Rusk and Alto students, said Teresa Phifer, Precinct 2 justice of the peace and truancy court officer.

"Missing school on Labor Day is certainly not a good way to begin the school year," Judge Phifer said.

School districts file truancy charges on area students who have absentee problems. Students are filed on after they miss three or more days within a 10 day period, Judge Phifer said.

A child and parents are in danger of prosecution after 10 or more days or parts of days are missed within a six months period or three or more days or parts of days within a four week period.

"A child is usually placed on deferred probation, but the parent is fined," Judge Phifer said.
