Farewell, Lady Bird
Joanna Reagan

I am thinking today of the lovely East Texan, Lady Bird Johnson, who gave our country the beautiful gift of flowers in our nation's capitol and along our highways. Nothing set off all that white marble like Lady Bird's flowers.

This year the Texas wildflowers have been so magnificent with fields of blue bonnets and Indian paint brush. I e-mailed a friend in D.C. and said that I believed Lady Bird wanted to beautify the city of Washington with gardens because she missed the beautiful wildflowers here in Texas. I'm sure her heart and spirit pined for them.

Her accomplishments were many, but I will always be thankful for her flowers in Washington and along the highways across the nation. This day we could do a lot worse than reflect on their beauty and the lovely nature of our former first lady and Texan, Lady Bird Johnson. May she rest in peace.
