Heat is on to replace AC system The heat is on this month to install a new air conditioning system at the Cherokee Courthouse. Work is expected to begin on Wednesday. "There will be no air conditioning in many of the county offices and the public is reminded to call prior to visiting the courthouse. Most offices are expected to be open. The construction work at the courthouse will not affect the satellite offices and they will be open as usual," County Judge Chris Davis told commissioners Monday morning. During the public comment section of the Monday's meeting, commissioners heard reports from Mary Sitton and Harold Acker concerning stray dogs. Mr. Acker said he had reported to the court at the last meeting that it costs $20 to take a dog to the shelter. "My wife told me I was wrong, it now costs $35," he said. He discussed the impact this cost has on minimum wage persons living in the county. Mrs. Sitton said she was afraid of dogs. At one time she was bitten by a rabid dog and had to take rabies shots. A pit bull has been seen at her house, which alarmed her. She also reported on the number of dogs appearing on county roads in her neighborhood. A representative of the animal shelter in Jacksonville told commissioners that a report on possible shelter costs to the county will be available at the next meeting. During the business meeting commissioners approved the laying of utility lines in Precincts 1 and 3. Educational certificates presented to commissioners from V.G. Young were accepted. Judge Davis was authorized to sign documents to finance three new Mack Dump trucks for Precincts 1, 2 and 3. "The trucks are actually leased by the county for $6,000 each. After three years the Mack Dump Trucks are returned to the company. The county paid $72,000 in addition to the $6,000 and received $80,000 back from the company," Kevin Pierce, Commissioner Precinct 2, said. Commissioners authorized advertising for bids for chip seal/seal coat and primer for one or more precincts. Items on the consent agenda approved included monthly reports for constables Precincts 2 and 3; the Cornelius Subdivision for plat purposes only; Janet Gates to attend the seventh annual Texas District Court Alliance Workshop Clerk's College 2007 at Kerrville Sept. 18-20. Attending the meeting were Judge Davis; Commissioners Mary Gregg, Pierce, Moody Glass III and Byron Underwood; County Clerk Laverne Lusk and County Auditor L.H. Crockett. |
