NEWS is June 23 The annual Hendrick family reunion will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Campground Baptist Church, four miles west of Alto on Highway 294. A covered dish luncheon will be held at noon. The annual business meeting will follow. James Hendrick will be in charge of the business session. Cemetery dues are $10 and may be mailed to Hendrick Cemetery, in care of Butch Holcomb, treasurer; Route 1, Box 1771, Rusk 75785. Battle of the Bands planned for June 30 Rusk Battle of the Bands will be Saturday, June 30, at the Cherokee Civic Theatre in Rusk. The event is sponsored by the Rusk Chamber of Commerce. Entry fee is $75. Prizes are $300 for first place; $200 for second; and $100 for third. Any type of music is allowed. For more information, contact Steven Crosby at (903) 284-8888. Mother Frances receives Award of Excellence Mother Frances Hospital has received the Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Award of Excellence from TMF Health Quality Institute, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Texas. The award acknowledges the hospital for improving care related to acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure and pneumonia. These clinical areas have been designated as national health care priorities by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Joint Commission. The award will be presented June 28 in Austin. Mother Frances Hospital was one of 63 Texas hospitals receiving the award and the only one in East Texas. Hunter education course planned Aug. 7-8 The Cherokee County Farm Bureau will sponsor a hunters education course Aug. 7-8. The two day course will be conducted from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. with lunch provided. There must be a minimum of 15 people to conduct the class. Participants must be 12-years-old before Aug. 7. To hunt out of state this course is required. It will be taught at the ag department at Rusk High School and cost is $15. To participate RSVP by July 3 to Rhonda Robinson at (903) 683- 2576. It's time to renew pesticide applicators license René McCracken, cooperative extension agent, said most of the more effective and better valued products for weed control require a pesticide applicators license.
