Judges attend school

Justices of the Peace Brenda Dominy, Precinct 1, and Vera Foreman, Precinct 4, joined more than 60 other JPs and court clerks for inquest training in Tyler May 15.

A $200,000 judicial education grant awarded to the Texas Justice Court Judges Association by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals made the training possible.

Veterans will be honored

A special salute to all Vets is planned on the eve of Rusk's Massive Fourth of July Ceremony and Parade from 7-10 p.m. Friday, June 29. Everything is free for all vets and their spouses. There will be big band music, food, soft drinks, all amidst a multitude of 20th Century combat vehicles. This is an opportunity to personally thank all the wonderful men and women who have put their lives on the line for America. To make this the largest "thank you" party that the Vets have ever seen, sponsors are asking for anything citizens can bring, for themselves and a couple of vets. This includes food, such as covered dishes, water, soft drinks (no alcohol), chairs and tables.

Benefactors for the event include Texas National Bank, Sam Florian and Bob Francis Ford. The Rotary and Lions Club and the Rusk Chamber will decorate.

This free event will be held at Toyland Combat Vehicles Museum, south of Rusk, off U.S. Highway 69. To get to the museum go west on FM 241 for approximately a mile, then take a hard left onto CR 2407. The museum is about a mile up on the right. Uniforms would be nice but not required. Women may want to wear 40's attire. For more information, call Roy Reynolds, event organizer, (903) 683-1947 or the Rusk Chamber of Commerce at (903) 683-4242.

It's time to renew pest

license

The Texas weather has been anything but normal this year following a long hot and dry spell and now an overabundance of rain that should do more than jump start lawns and gardens. Over the past few weeks the area has had more than a fair share of "weed" issues with garden and forage producers alike. René McCracken, cooperative extension agent, said most of the more effective and better valued products for weed control require a pesticide applicators license. Persons interested in obtaining a license or a list of fees and required course materials, may contact Ms. McCracken at (903) 683-5416 or lrmccracken@ag.tamu.edu. Date and time will be announced as soon as there are 10 or more participants.
