Rusk Eagle baseball/

softball camp slated

The Rusk Eagle baseball/softball camp has been scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, June 4-8 at Rusk High School. Emphasis will be placed on hitting, throwing and running.

Radar guns will be used to assess throwing speed and campers will be able to see themselves on video to make any corrections needed to become a better player.

Coach Kincade's Future

Stars basketball camp

slated for June

Coach Kincade's Future Stars Basketball Summer Camp for boys in grades 4-8 will be from 9 a.m. to noon June 18-21. Cost is $30 for the first child and $20 for each additional child. The K-3rd grade camp will be from 9 a.m. to noon June 25-28. Cost is the same. All camps will be held at the Rusk High School gymnasium. Men's basketball league

to start in Rusk

Rusk Varsity Basketball Coach Tracy Kincade is starting a men's basketball league for ages 18 and over. Games will be played on Sundays in the Rusk High School Gymnasium. The cost is $100 per team. Games will consist of two 20-minute halves. Teams are limited to a maximum of 10 players on the roster. No roster changes are allowed after week two of the season. The league will start when four teams have registered. Championship will be determined by a tournament at the end of the season. For more information, contact Coach Kincade at (903) 262-4865.

Maggard awarded

Purple Heart

Navy Seaman Aaron P. Maggard, son of Lori and Michael Birkelbach of Rusk, has been awarded a Purple Heart for injuries he received on Sept. 9, 2006, in Anah, Iraq when his squad was hit with an improvised explosive device (IED).

Seaman Maggard, a 26-year old hospital corpsman from Corsicana, was hit in the jaw with shrapnel. Though suffering a serious injury to his face, Seaman Maggard treated two Marines and an Iraqi soldier for their injuries.

When the wounded were loaded onto a Humvee, Seaman Maggard continued treating the wounded Marines' injuries.

Uncle Fletch Burger and BBQ cook-off/festival slated

in Athens on June 9

The Uncle Fletch Burger and Barbecue cook-off will take place in Athens on June 9 at the Lake Athens Marina on FM 2495. Gates open at 10 a.m.

Cook-off teams will compete in four categories: chicken, brisket, ribs and hamburgers. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Friday, June 8.

The cook-off will also feature a festival, including pony rides, a petting zoo and hamburger related games.

The Uncle Fletch Burger and Barbecue Cook-off is named after Fletcher Davis, who owned a cafe in Athens in the late 1880s and is credited with the invention of the hamburger. He went on to introduce the hamburger at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.

McKnight Cemetery

historical marker

dedication set for June 9

The Texas Historical Commission and McKnight Cemetery Board of Directors has scheduled a historical marker dedication ceremony for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9 in the McKnight C.M.E. Church sanctuary on County Road 975, just off Hwy 204 in Cushing.

The program will include a presentation by Bob Bowman, member of the Texas Historical Commission, Dr. Jere Jackson, chairman of the Nacogdoches County Historical Commission, and Tom Bush, commissioner of Pct. 1 of Nacogdoches County.

The McKnight Cemetery Association applied to the Texas Historical Commission in 2005 for the official historic site designation and was notified of their approval on June 19, 2006.The marker will be installed prior to the ceremony. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

Homecoming is June 2

The Lynches Chapel community homecoming will be Sunday, June 2, at the Edith Hendrick pavilion at the Lynches Chapel United Methodist Church. The program will begin at 10:45 a.m. and dinner will be served under the pavilion. The event is sponsored by the Lynches Chapel Cemetery Association.

The sixth annual East Texas Christian Writers Çonference will be held June 1-2 at East Texas Baptist University. Registration may be done at www.etbu.edu or with Jerry Hopkins, Professor of History at East Texas Baptist University.

LMC offers continuing

education, summer camp

Lon Morris College will offer continuing education courses and summer camps to the community.

Continuing education will include Spanish for Today, Basic Digital Photography and Lifeguard Certification.

Camp and Outreach programs will include the Sizzling Summer Learning Enrichment Program, Kids Theatre, Bearcat Basketball, Baseball Clinics, Softball Clinics, Kid Kountry, Boy Scouts of America, Kicks for Kids Soccer and UCA Cheer Day Camp.

Jarratt Cemetery Annual

Memorial Service and

business meeting set

The annual memorial service and business meeting of the Jarratt Cemetery Associatiion will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 2 at Jarratt Cemetery. Registration of members and guests begins at 10 a.m.

The memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. and the business meeting and election of officers will follow. Lunch will be held at noon under the pavilion.

The cemetery is located on FM 22 approximately 1.25 miles east of Craft.

Volunteers are sought

Volunteers are needed at East Texas Medical Center Rusk.
