College or no college In just a few weeks, this year's crop of high school seniors will begin a new chapter in their lives. For many, college is right around the corner and in the fall they will continue their studies at the next level. But, college is not for everyone. How many college graduates work for entrepreneurs who did not even go to college, but now own their own companies? Harry's Building Materials, Inc. has been in business for more than 50 years. We supply building materials to homebuilders and homeowners all over East Texas. Homebuilding is booming in East Texas and there are needs in all aspects of our industry. Needs are for young people who are willing to work hard to learn a trade. Needs are for young people who are willing to start out as helpers in various trades and then become the plumbers, electricians, painters, carpenters, HVAC mechanics, drywall finishers, cabinet makers, flooring installers and general contractors of the future. There are needs for young people who are willing to work with their hands as well as their minds. Needs are for young people who enjoy working on tangible projects where results are clearly visible. From entry level jobs in these and other areas of the building trades, young people can develop the skills, abilities and professional relationships that will enable them to become the business owners of their generation. It will require hard work, focus, determination, dedication, perserverance, initiative and an ability to defer self gratification. Those who choose to go to college will also have to display these same attributes to be successful in their studies. Because if they just go to college to have a good time and party, they will do nothing but waste their tuition dollars. We at Harry's do not want to discourage anyone who is so inclined and has the study skills and discipline to continue their education from going on to college. But, college is not the only way to make a good living over the long haul. And, we are always looking for bright and industrious young people to learn our business from the ground up with a view toward being the key employees of the future in Harry's Building Materials, Inc. If this describes you, stop by one of our stores and visit with the store manager. |
