NEWS High planned The annual homecoming at Central High near Alto is planned for Sunday, May 6. There will be a covered dish lunch. The public is invited to attend and enjoy visiting with friends and relatives. Christian writers will meet May 10 in Jacksonville The East Texas chapter of Inspirational Writers Alive! will meet at First Church of the Nazarene, corner Beaumont and Bryan Streets in Jacksonville, at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, May 10. This IWA! chapter is now 12 years old. Attendees are asked to bring three -five pages of manuscript, double spaced and a daily devotional if possible, with no more than 300 words in the body of the writing. Devotional writers will start with a little-known scripture and Bible used (such as KJV or NIV), ending with a short one-two line prayer. Deadline for the annual writing competition is May 15. One may also enter other categories including short story, children's short story, article, drama script or book proposal. Members are asked to bring along a legal size envelope with two stamp postage and a manuscript size envelope with one stamp postage and be ready to mail off an entry or more. The IWA! writing competition is known nationwide and offers cash for first, second and third place winners and a certificate for all winners. ETMC Rusk hosts heart health fair May 23 East Texas Medical Center Rusk will host a free heart health fair from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 23. The fair will provide an opportunity for area citizens to learn the symptoms of cardiac arrest and what to do in the event of a heart attack. Free EKG screenings will be given to the first 24 who register. The Olympic Center will be open for information and instructional tours. EMS will display an ambulance and a paramedic will be available to answer questions about new EKG technology.
Door prize drawings will be held. May 12 elections Early voting began Monday and will continue through May 8 for the May 12 special constitutional amendment election and local city and school elections. Voting for the constitutional election that involves lowering taxes for the elderly and disabled persons is scheduled for May 12. Early voting is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Cherokee County Courthouse, the Jacksonville Senior Citizens Building and the A. Frank Smith United Methodist Church in Alto. Early voting for contested city and school elections will be held at the various city halls and school administration buildings throughout the county. If there is no opposition that election has been cancelled. County elections cancelled include Alto city, Wells city and school, Gallatin city, Reklaw city and New Summerfield city. Rusk city bus serves seniors The city of Rusk maintains a transportation service for seniors. This service is provided only within the city's boundaries. Cost to board is $1 which entitles the rider to two stops, with 50 cents being charged for each additional stop. Interested persons may contact city hall at (903) 683-2213 for further details. Registration for ESL summer school is through May 4 Registration for Rusk Primary School's ESL English as a Second Language (ESL) summer school program will be from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. through Friday, May 4. at the Rusk Primary School office.The summer school program is for ESL students entering kindergarten and first grade during the 2007-08 school year. ESL summer school will be from 8 a.m.- noon Monday through Friday June 4-July 16. Alto Kindergarten, Pre-K registration planned Pre-K four- year-old roundup for the 2007-08 school year will continue from noon to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4 on the Alto elementary campus. Registration began on Tuesday. A child must be four-years-old by Sept. 1 to be eligible to enter this program. The four-year-old program will be a full day program with educational hours from 7:45 a.m. - 3:35 p.m. each day (this is a change in hours from this year). Transportation to and from school will be provided along with breakfast and lunch. Enrollment priority will be given to those students who qualify as homeless, ESL, or for the free or reduced lunch program. Church schedules revival Faith Holy Tabernacle non-demonination church at 525 North Main in downtown Rusk will conduct revival services at 7:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, May 7-11. Speaker will be Evangelist Lola Johnson of Henderson. The Rev. Sam E. Willis is church pastor. Republican Club slates meeting May 7 The Cherokee County Republican Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday May 7, at the Kings Wok Chinese Restaurant 1644 S. Jackson in Jacksonville.
