BY LELAND ACKER STAFF WRITER

When track season began, Rusk girls track coach Jamie Hays said she was looking forward to a competitive year. Finishing 4th in district and sending five individual athletes and one relay team to regionals is probably a year worth remembering.

The 1600-meter relay team of Brittney Session, Lainey Upshaw, Rachel Simmons and April Shedd finished 3rd in district with a time of 4:33.50. Sheena Henderson and Amanda Session will serve as alternates should any of the relay team members be unable to compete.

Two Lady Eagles struck gold at the district meet. Christie Sharpless won 1st place in pole vault after clearing the bar at 9'6". April Shedd won the gold in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:34.89. Sharpless and Shedd will both advance to regionals in their respective events.

Also advancing to regionals are: Cambry Blakemore (2nd, discus, 104'4") and A. Session (2nd, long jump, 17' 9 3/4"; 3rd, 200-meter dash, 26.94).

Others placing for Rusk are: Charnell Franklin (5th, shot put, 30'2"), Grace Castillo (5th, 3200-meter run, 14:36.2), Shedd (3rd, 1600- meter run, 5:59.00).

The 400-meter relay team (Calah Clark, Upshaw, Leslie Bradford and Jelissa Session) placed 7th with a time of 55.51. The 800-meter relay team (Clark, B. Session, J. Session and A. Session) placed 4th with a time of 1:54.06.

The district meet was held last week in Diboll.
