Kindergarten, Pre-K registration slated

These students in Diane Scott's Pre-k 4 class are working in their journals. Mattilyn Hamilton, Cassidy Martin, Adanta Freeney, Alex Kennedy and Bailey Beard spend the day learning pre-kindergarten skills that will prepare them for kindergarten. Registration for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes is May 1.
Registration for Rusk ISD kindergarten students for the 2007-08 school year will be held from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, at the Primary School office.

All children who will be five years-of-age, on or before Sept. 1 may register for all day kindergarten classes on this day. Children who will be four-years-old, on or before Sept. 1 may register for full day pre-kindergarten or Head Start pre-kindergarten classes. Children who will be three-years-old, on or before Sept. 1 may register for half day pre-kindergarten classes. Pre-kindergarten applicants need to bring a current check stub. In addition, they will need to bring their 2006 income tax return, W-2 and/or TANF verification as proof of income for pre-registration. All pre-kindergarten applicants also will be required to submit verification of gross pay for the month of July 2007, before beginning classes in the fall. Pre-kindergarten students also need to bring social security cards for each family member of the family as well as the child's Medicaid card if applicable.

Parents will need to bring a certified copy of the child's birth certificate, complete immunization record, Social Security card and proof of residency to school. The copy of the birth certificate must be one obtained from the county clerk's office. A complete immunization record is required before a child can enter school the first day. A DPT, Hepatitis B and Oral Polio series is required, with a booster after the fourth birthday. Two measles, mumps, and rubella, (MMR) are needed. Also required shots are Hepatitis A and pneumococcal vaccines for Pre-k students. The Haemophilus Influenza (type) B or HIB, is required before age five. Effective Aug. 1, 2000, children entering school who have not had chicken pox need a Varicella vaccination. To assist with immunization updates, children may be taken to the Cherokee County Health Dept. at 1209 N. Main on Mondays through Thursdays prior to enrollment to receive current immunizations. Please remember to bring your child's current immunization record with you to registration.

This registration is held to ensure that a sufficient number of classes can be planned for the coming school year. Pre-kindergarten classes have limited spaces so this enrollment date is important. After this registration, your pre-kindergarten child will only need to bring a July 2007 check stub to the school by Aug. 1.

Kindergarten students that register now will not need to register again before the first day of school. If you have any questions, please call the Primary School at (903) 683-6106.
