Lions Club calls for trash pick-up day on April 14
BY BILLY WATSON SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR

Lion President Sonny Adams began the meeting on March 8 by calling for the invocation, the pledges and the singing.

Tim Timmons announced that we have a trash pick up day on the highway with the Leo Club on April 14.

Billy Watson introduced his granddaughter Leigh Ann Watson with the American Cancer Society of Lufkin. Leigh Ann spoke on 'Relay for Life Cancer Program'. Leigh Ann has worked for the American Cancer Society for the past 5 1/2 years. She started out as a volunteer walking in a 'Relay for Life'. She said they have a national call number which is 1- 800-ACS2345 and is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

She said they now have a Patient Service Center which provides information and a website, www.cancer.org. It provides all types of information on different types of cancers and treatment options, a cancer survivor database and a 'Clinical Trial Database.' In the way of medical equipment we have things like hospital beds, bedside commodes, walkers, wheelchairs, etc. A person in need must have is a prescription from their doctor. The American Cancer Society pays for the equipment for as long as the patient needs it. They also provide wigs, turbans & colon cancer supplies.

Another service is the 'Road to Recovery' program. If a patient cannot afford or does not have transportation to radiation or chemotherapy the American Cancer Society provides transportation.

They also provide 'Reach to Recovery' program which is for breast cancer survivors who are at least a year in remission, and these service people go out and visit the new ones diagnosed, whether in the hospital or at home. They provide a program to stop smoking.

They offer a 'Look Good-Feel Good' program to provide beauty needs to women, a 'Man to Man' program concerning prostate cancer in order for the men to compare notes.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness month. If you are 50-years old or older then you should definitely have a colonoscopy.
