The Rusk Eagle baseball team continues to ride its wave of momentum through District 20-AAA, picking up two wins over Center and Huntington. The Eagles beat Huntington 8-2 on Thursday and 10-runned Center 13-0 on Friday.
Stephen Halbert picked up the win during the Huntington game. He is now 4-1 on the season. Good hitting was the wind beneath the Eagles' wings, as Trent Vaught hit a triple to propel Rusk to victory. Other high-flyers were Adam Hicks, Pax Richey, Kyle Garner and Chance Davis.
It only took the Eagles five innings to cook Center's goose Friday. Rusk took a 13-0 lead, winning the game by virtue of the 10-run rule. Brent Jones was the winning pitcher for the Eagles.
Adam Hicks led the hitting for the Eagles with one triple and two singles. Other leading hitters were Cody Daniel (2-2), Pax Richey (2-2) and Chance Davis (2-3).
The win lifts the Eagles to a 10-7 record, 3-0 in district play. The Eagles travel to Carthage Friday, with the JV game beginning at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity following at 7 p.m.
The feathered flock will return to Eagle field to play Central on Tuesday, March 27. JV games begin at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity plays at 7 p.m.
The next scheduled broadcast of Rusk Eagle baseball will be on April 10 when the team rematches Center.
Lady Eagles suffer first district
loss against Huntington
The Lady Eagles' softball team faced a major District 20-AAA showdown with Huntington Saturday after beating the Center Lady Riders 7-3 the night before in Center.
Saturday's game with Huntington saw the Lady Eagles and the Devilettes tied for 1st place in district with 3-0 records.
Both teams played well on defense, only allowing three hits each.
However, the difference maker in the game came in the bottom of the 5th inning, when a twobase error by Rusk led to two Huntington base runners being able to score.
The loss gives Rusk a 12-6-2 record, 3-1 in district. Huntington advances to a 15-1-1 record, 4-0 in district.
Rusk faces Carthage Friday, with the JV game beginning at 4:30 and the varsity starting at 6:30 p.m. Carthage, listed by Rusk coach Rick Frauenberg as one of the toughest teams in district, lost to Huntington 3-0 on March 9.
