Two 18-wheelers crash Alto's peaceful serenity
Rain slick roads contribute to accidents last week
BY LELAND ACKER

The cab of an 18-wheeler lies in a yard after being torn from its chasse during a Wednesday morning accident in Alto. The truck was westbound on Hwy 21 East in Alto when it left the road, striking a house and causing major structural damage to the home.
Slick roads played a role in two 18-wheeler crashes Wednesday on Hwy 21 near the Larrison Creek bridge. The accidents happened almost 12 hours apart, said Alto Police Chief Charles Barron.

Chief Barron said the first accident, involving a USA truck, took place at approximately 4 a.m.

"(The driver) was coming up the hill, speed and the slick roads were a factor," Chief Barron said. "He lost control of the truck. Fatigue was a contributing factor, though he won't admit it. He left Indiana Monday and was headed to Bryan."

The truck was westbound on Hwy 21 when it left the pavement and struck a house, causing significant damage to the home. Ultimately, the cab was ripped from the chasse.

Nearly 12 hours later, another accident involving an 18- wheeler happened at the Larrison Creek bridge.

"He missed the guard rail and landed in the creek," Chief Barron said. "The road was slick, and there's a little bit of a curve there."
