Church gives scholarship honoring Rusk pastor

Members of the Tyler First Presbyterian Church have established The David O'Neal Endowed Scholarship at Austin College in Sherman.

The annual scholarship honors the Rev. O'Neal for his 18 years of service. The Rev. O'Neal is currently pastor of the Rusk First Presbyterian Church.

"Austin College prides itself on a student body committed to academic excellence and preparation for civic leadership and service," said Nan Davis, vice-president for Institutional Enrollment at Austin College in a prepared statement.

"Scholarships like The David O'Neal Endowed Scholarship help us to attract the type of students who will excel at Austin College," she said.

Members of the Tyler church will have first preference for the scholarship and then students with financial need from East Texas will be considered, the college said.

The scholarship may be renewed for four years if the recipient maintains satisfactory academic progress of a 3.0 overall grade point average at the end of each spring term.
